Michael and I are about to move across the country, to Virginia! We have enjoyed our first year as a married couple living in our nest. We are packing up all our things to move for Michael to go to grad school. There are so many things Im going to miss about California. The weather, ocean, San Francisco, Monterey, the fog, the hills and mountains. I'm a 4th generation Californian and am proud to be so. I know where my grandfather was born, my father and mother too. I have real roots and thats something I value and therefore moving away from my family and its history will be challenging.
Having said that, I am also very excited to MOVE. To be on our own, see new places, meet new people. We have visited Virginia a couple of times and have been struck with the friendliness of the people. The manners of the South are entirely different than they are here in the Bay Area. Last time we were visiting, Michael even busted out a "Y'all" I was quite amused. If he's like that now, what will he be saying in two years? "Darlin', please pass me my grits and sweet tea?" You also cant throw a stick without finding a historic landmark or battle site. For two history nerds like us that is just too good to be true. I have not found a job yet but we have already begun planning trips to DC, Williamsburg, Monticello, and Mt. Vernon, and on, and on, and on :) I just recently found out that I am somehow related to Stonewall Jackson and so we'll have to go to his home too!
We've started packing this week. SLOWLY. I started emptying out my junk and taking boxes to donate. My mom's been over a couple of days to help me pack up my kitchen, and today Mikes parents came and helped in the office and with my china. Packing china is harder than I thought.
One thing about moving that has actually really made me happy is that i got all our boxes for free! YEP FREE!!! I went to
www.uhaul.com/exchange. And someone posted that they were giving away boxes. I emailed them and went over to their place and SCORE!!!! Their garage was packed full of boxes. They were not broken down and if the guy hadn't given me a kitchen knife to cut the tape I would have been really stuck. Michael and I were able to get about 40-50 small medium and large boxes for FREE! As a dedicated free product Junkie I really cant express my happiness at this box-ie windfall!
We are planning to get our moving cube on May 9th and leave on the 14th. I hope we get everything done on time.
